What are measurement services?

Floorplan services are just what they sound like: Based on what you want, an appraiser will measure your home's dimensions and area, then draw a basic or highly detailed floorplan. The appraiser's report and floorplan is a document that can be used to prove an accurate Gross Living Area (GLA), the total livable area, of your home. These services are useful and sometimes necessary when disputing property taxes or selling a property.

How does a home measurement or floorplan service work?

During a home measurement service, an appraiser measures your property with a measuring tool — generally a tape or laser measuring device. As they move around the house, they note the layout of the rooms and other features, like stairs, entryways, and pantries. They may sketch out the property. Then, the appraiser types up a report and detailed sketch showing the total square footage and the general layout of the house.
